At our exhibit, you will learn about the story of Iva Toguri, a woman who was enlisted by the Japanese military to become a host for the Japnese Shortwave Program "The Zero Hour". Not many archives of her broadcasts remain despite her court case and the memories and testimonies of soldiers. She is often remembered as a satirical enemy, often calling herself "Oprhan Annie", a nod to the American Radio Program of similar name. Below, we have provided one of the few surviving audio clips from one of her broadcasts, as well as a cartoon commissioned by the U.S. Navy to promote war effort and war bonds.
Listen to a real broadcast from Iva Toguri (audio begins playing at 20 seconds):
This broadcast contains music and a narration from Iva, including her playful banter she often included in secret within her time on the show. She also mulls over propaganda against the Allies, showing how she used her knowledge against the enemy at the time.
